En el mejor de los casos, la colaboración implica aprender unos de otros —no por el resultado deseado, sino por el placer de ver cómo se desarrolla el proceso—. Cuando ambas partes participan en un intercambio discursivo, las nuevas ideas empiezan a mezclarse y a surgir de forma inesperada. Este enfoque se manifestó en la exposición Pool en JOAN, una colaboración entre la artista de performance Emily Mast y CarWash Collective, un dúo formado por la artista visual Beverly Semmes y la diseñadora de moda Jennifer Minniti. El enfoque multidisciplinario de cada artista complementó la práctica de sus colaboradores, iniciando un diálogo pertinente sobre la cultura visual tanto de la pornografía como de la moda.

Una performance dirigida por Emily Mast inauguró la exposición. En ella, cinco artistas bailaban al son de la música de club dentro de los límites de unas formas azules casi circulares y retorcidas en el suelo de la galería; se movían con enérgicos movimientos atrofiados y, de vez en cuando, se apoyaban en los rectángulos de color melocotón pintados en las paredes, congelando sus cuerpos en movimiento como si posaran para la cámara de un director. De vez en cuando, caminaban alrededor de la instalación Pool (todas las obras de 2022) de Semmes, un gran charco hecho de raso, organza, tul y luces LED en el centro de la galería. Los pliegues de la tela, similares a las ondas del agua, se hacían eco del movimiento continuo de la performance. 

El vestuario de las artistas fue el primer guiño a la práctica colaborativa. Sus calzones, faldas y camisetas sin mangas fueron diseñados por Minniti y se inspiraron en el Feminist Responsibility Project (FRP, Proyecto de Responsabilidad Feminista) de Semmes, una serie en curso que se remonta a una colección de revistas Penthouse y Playboy que Semmes adquirió de un vecino en los años 90. La artista no se ocupó seriamente de ellas hasta principios de la década de 2000, cuando se interesó por hacer alteraciones feministas en las fotografías de temática masculina y comenzó a pintar sobre los elementos de las imágenes que consideraba misóginos, manteniendo visibles los que le parecían estéticamente interesantes1. La censura y la complicación de estas imágenes fueron su manera irónica de asumir la “responsabilidad”, protegiendo a estos modelos de la sexualización sin dejar de complacer las cualidades más saludables, y sin embargo seductoras, de la forma humana. Una de estas fotografías alteradas aparece en el cuadro Silver Hat [Sombrero plateado] (2018), en el que una mujer desnuda posa contra una barandilla con las piernas abiertas. Semmes la cubrió con un fino velo de pintura azul, colocó una mancha negra alrededor de su pelvis y garabateó unas botas plateadas hasta la rodilla y un sombrero bergère de gran tamaño, evocando el retrato del siglo XVIII. Aunque Silver Hat no se expuso en JOAN, la fotografía se imprimió digitalmente en tela de seda para confeccionar algunas de las prendas de los artistas. Estas formas de vestir llevan el legado de la mirada cosificadora de los hombres —las huellas de la eficacia con la que muchos de nosotros hemos sido condicionados para ver a través del lente del deseo heterosexual.

Inmediatamente después del día de la inauguración, los tres artistas montaron la galería para el resto de la exposición. Proyectaron la documentación de video de la performance en una pared y expusieron los conjuntos de los artistas en un perchero cercano. (Cada traje lleva el nombre de pila de un bailarín —Gregory, Eunjin, Jessica, Micah y Darrian—, un gesto indicativo de agradecimiento). En el video se oye a Mast repetir las palabras que pronunció durante la actuación: “…cuatro, tres, dos, uno, ¡posa!”. Estas órdenes aluden a las pasarelas, espectáculos conocidos por homogeneizar los ideales de belleza y fabricar una sensación de glamour típicamente atribuida a los cuerpos delgados y jóvenes (y a menudo blancos). Sin embargo, en la coreografía del espectáculo los artistas se alejaron de esos clichés al moverse de forma erótica y, en ocasiones, incómoda: Gregory se encorvaba en el suelo; Jessica, Micah y Eunjin saltaban dando tumbos; y Darrian exhibía una serie de cojines redondos de color carne llamados CarWash Purses [Bolsos para el lavado de autos]. Todos los artistas parecían tener el control de su subjetividad, de cómo querían que les vieran los demás. Conscientes de la presencia del público, abrazaron su libertad sexual, canalizando físicamente el espíritu empoderado del FRP.

Tradicionalmente, la industria de la moda ha sido apartada del canon de las bellas artes, sospechosa de carecer de rigor intelectual por quienes ven las prácticas históricamente femeninas como formas menores de expresión creativa. Por el contrario, en una entrevista reciente Semmes detalló su interés inicial por lol textil como medio. Comenzó a temprana edad, dijo, cuando veía a sus tías confeccionar colchas o a su abuela diseñar ropa2. Estas actividades, culturalmente aceptadas como parte de la vida cotidiana, tienen una larga historia de colaboración. Al igual que el ímpetu de Pool, muchas manos participan en la labor de producir textiles, un proceso que a menudo se realiza en comunidad.

Los cuerpos femeninos y no conformes con el género han aprendido a desenvolverse en el mundo tomando decisiones de moda que, aunque aparentemente mundanas, tienen sus raíces en la supervivencia. Con Pool, Mast y CarWash Collective abordaron estas elecciones pensando en la libertad sexual de una manera muy diferente a la que sugieren los medios de comunicación convencionales, como algo que tiene menos que ver con la representación de la desnudez y más con el derecho a desafiar la mirada patriarcal. A través de capas de ropa, pintura y movimiento, estos artistas utilizaron la colaboración —que a menudo adoptó la forma de desobediencia colectiva— como lente para la experimentación lúdica con la exposición y ocultación del cuerpo.
