The Communications and Social Media Editor is part of a growing Communications team. You will be working directly with the Communications team to strategically coordinate the gallery’s press engagements and social media feed; raising the profile of the gallery by proactively cultivating relationships with writers, editors, and publications worldwide; and collaboratively coordinate gallery public programming. We are looking for someone who will bring fresh ideas for increased productivity and positive workflow to this position. You will be joining a strong gallery staff that is dedicated to its artists and exhibitions.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate communication campaign plans and timelines alongside the team for all gallery locations
- Secure impactful feature coverage on exhibitions and partnerships, as well as news coverage for key initiatives
- Cultivate and manage a network of high-level media and partnership relationships
- Grow gallery’s social media following and engagement through experimentation/innovation and analytics-based reporting
- Cultivate and manage local community relationships
- Represent the gallery and attend events as required
- Evaluate campaigns in line with objectives and ensure findings are fed into future campaign plans
PUBLIC RELATIONS
- Draft communications materials including exhibition press releases and social media messaging for review and approval by the Communications and Editorial Director
- Alongside team, draft communications strategy and coordinate outgoing communications
- Distribute press releases to targeted media and handle press inquiries and image requests from media, individuals, and other organizations.
- Alongside team, establish and manage press campaigns for exhibitions and events
- Organize and prepare press materials
- Check correct approval processes and copyright licenses are in place for press image release
- Along with the Communications team members, schedule and manage all on-site press visits, events, and press photo-shoots
- Oversee approval process for above-mentioned communications texts
- Monitor press coverage and request corrections where appropriate
- Maintain press contacts database in collaboration with the Communications team
SOCIAL MEDIA / DIGITAL CAMPAIGNS
- Coordinate social media strategy, content, and engagement for gallery
- Grow gallery’s social media following and engagement through experimentation/innovation and analytics-based reporting
MARKETING ASSETS
- Provide copy for use adaptation in marketing assets as required
- Collaborate with team to write and produce digital promo content
COMMUNITY
- Develop and foster community relations through involvement in community initiatives and projects.
GENERAL
- Communicate gallery’s artists’ practices & biographies to writers, editors, curators, clients, and the public in an articulate, engaging, and professional manner
- Follow trends in press outreach, audience growth, and brand development
Requirements
- Demonstrated skill in writing about art and exhibitions
- An established network of press and media contacts with a focus on those relevant to Los Angeles in addition to wider US-based contacts.
- Educated to degree level, preferably in arts or humanities subject (BA required)
- Outstanding attention to detail
- Excellent skills in Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Adobe CS5, particularly Photoshop and InDesign (essential), working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Mac OSX
- Strong time management skills with the ability to work independently and manage varied deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Experience working in an art gallery or artist studio environment with an understanding of contemporary art
