Request for Qualifications: West Harbor Waterfront Public Art
Category
Application Deadline
Information
Angels Gate Cultural Center, the designated Public Art Advisor for the West Harbor Waterfront Development, is seeking multiple artists to create public art of various mediums, including but not limited to, murals, large scale sculpture, sound art, digital art projections/video displays, and multi-sensory experiences. Selected projects will demonstrate unique artistic perspectives and approaches that are interested in investigating the Port of Los Angeles and topics relevant to our local diverse communities that call San Pedro home. Applications for Phase I: Request for Qualifications (RFQ) are due by 11:59pm on July 8th, 2024.
Located at the heart of the Port of Los Angeles, the West Harbor Waterfront bridges the gap between local heritage and global commerce. Art installations will act as focal points for exploration and dialogue, encouraging visitors to engage with public art within a commercial environment. Acknowledging the vibrant arts community of San Pedro, West Harbor’s art program aims to celebrate local talent in San Pedro, as well as regional and international artists.
Phase I: Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is open to all eligible artists and artist teams with submissions due Wednesday, July 8th, 2024. Following a review process of RFQ applications, select artists will be invited to submit a full proposal at a later date, compensated with a proposal honorarium. Installations should be able to be fully installed at the West Harbor Development within a 4-month period beginning in late 2024 through 2025. Maximum project budgets will vary depending on project site and scope, with all-inclusive budgets ranging between $1,000 – $80,000. Successful proposals will demonstrate an understanding of the location in concept and execution. Themes should relate to San Pedro, the Port of Los Angeles, and/or local communities in the Los Angeles Harbor region, including the economy and industry of the Port. Sustainability should be considered, including materials that patina well in a harsh marine environment.
A public Information Session will be held on Zoom Wednesday, May 29 at 7pm Pacific Time. This session will seek feedback from the local community regarding public art installations at the waterfront, and review the Request for Qualifications process.
