ACTIVATE Delegates functions as an advocacy lab for artists, creative sector workers, or anyone interested in the intersection of community organizing and the arts. The four-month program includes hands-on learning opportunities, such as networking with field leaders, meeting with LA City Council members and staffers to advocate for the arts, and mobilizing community members to support key legislation. The course will also briefly touch on the fundamentals of cultural policy and civic procedures with the aim of empowering arts leaders to drive change across Arts for LA’s four policy areas: affordable spaces for artists, creative career pathways, equitable arts education, and equitable arts funding.
Who is eligible to apply ACTIVATE Innovators + ACTIVATE Delegates?
ACTIVATE is open to artists, arts professionals, cultural workers, educators, and community advocates interested in making change across LA’s creative sectors. Additionally:
- Participants must live or work in LA County.
- Participants must be able to commit to all sessions.
- Participants will be selected to represent the broad geography and demographics of Los Angeles County. Programming will be fully remote in accordance with LA County Public Healthy guidelines.
- Participants must be 18 years or older to apply.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. Arts for LA fully supports the cost of running ACTIVATE. If you would like to support our work, please consider joining Arts for LA as a member.
Should I apply to ACTIVATE Delegates or ACTIVATE Innovators?
ACTIVATE Delegates focuses on the intersection of community organizing and the arts, giving participants the skills they need to mobilize their community, build power, and impact local decision makers and elected officials.
While the skills taught are widely applicable, ACTIVATE Delegates emphasizes the importance of the civic sphere and making change through local governments. No prior knowledge of advocacy/community organizing is necessary.
We welcome applications from anyone interested in exploring the question: “What can I, as an individual, do to build the power of our creative communities across the LA region?”

ACTIVATE Delegates – Session 1: Feb. 9, 2021 (evening)
Arts for LA Member Meeting: Feb. 10, 2021 (evening)
ACTIVATE Delegates – Session 2: March 2, 2021 (evening)
Arts for LA Member Meeting: March 10, 2021 (evening)
Arts Day: Mid-March, 2021 (morning)
Note: The date of Arts Day and the preparatory sessions above are still to be determined and subject to change!

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS + INFO
The 2021 ACTIVATE Delegates program will be entirely virtual and conducted via Zoom.
Participants in the ACTIVATE Delegates program are expected to
1) attend all of the above events and meetings and
2) complete all program assignments (approximately 1 hour per month of reading + reflection).
Don’t hesitate to reach out the the Arts for LA staff if you have questions about the above dates – all subject to change. While we expect all participants to attend these events, we are happy to work through any conflicts in advance!
