3. Invest in critical discourse around
the histories of exclusion embedded
in the art world 

We acknowledge that the art world we inhabit is intentionally designed to privilege a select few through racist, patriarchal, and capitalist structures, and are committed to critically investigating these structures, as well as imagining new pathways that dismantle them. We are committed to a politic of antiracism and to publishing critical texts that question the racist and exclusionary practices prominent within our field. We aim to produce critical texts on various spaces and artists, both young and established, thus working towards dismantling exclusionary gatekeeping tactics.

4. Provide fair and equitable wages
and support for our writers

Carla is committed to supporting our writers, editors, and artist collaborators through payment that is in accordance with payment guidelines established by W.A.G.E. in its certification program. We are also committed to providing invested, collaborative editorial and research support for our writers throughout the writing process. We will continue to reassess and increase our pay structure.

5. Write approachably and continually
adapt our grammar and
language conventions 

We recognize that language shapes culture, and we are committed to pursuing an approachable and progressive written tone and style in order to avoid the overly-academic art writing style that in itself becomes an exclusionary barrier. We are committed to examining and evolving our own use of language and grammar as our culture at large continues to shift. We will constantly redefine how our publication’s style can better represent our values.

6. Provide entry points into
the field of art writing

Alongside our established writers, we are committed to mentoring and uplifting the work of emerging critics. Through outreach, we aim to foster new connections with young writers, and offer mentorship and editorial support through the writing and publishing process. We believe that investing in a process of outreach and support for emerging critics is crucial in creating a more lateral and expansive art discourse that continues to evolve. We also advocate for artists to contribute critical texts from their unique perspective as makers. 

7. Maintain an open dialogue
with our community

Carla is committed to a self-reflective, ongoing evolution, as we work to better serve our community as a nexus for cultural discourse and welcome dialogue. We are invested in directly engaging in the community through public discourse and collective organizing efforts, as well as through our continued critical discourse in the written word.
